Conservation - JAGUAR RESEARCH PROJECTS

Using the results from the Mexico Workshop, the Jaguar Conservation Program continues to develop its suite of conservation projects in high-priority sites.

The program is currently working on methodologies for surveying and monitoring jaguar populations, their prey, and their habitat. A field depredation manual and a booklet on cattle husbandry techniques were recently completed and used as tools at our first rancher workshop meeting held in the Pantanal in Brazil in May 2001. In addition, field health and genetics manuals  have been developed to standardize sample collection and field procedures.

The Jaguar Conservation Program is currently establishing a monitoring program in Belize, landscape projects in Ecuador, Bolivia, and the Pantanal, and is beginning to conduct surveys in areas where the status of jaguars is unknown. We have also established a small grants program to provide support to jaguar research and conservation projects.
